Enough to verify your identity and meet US tax reporting rules: legal name, date of birth, address and a tax identification number. Businesses also provide entity details. It is collected in Settings → Verification.

Individuals

  • Legal name, as it appears on official documents

  • Date of birth

  • Residential address

  • Social Security Number or ITIN

  • A government-issued photo ID, in some cases

Businesses

  • Legal business name and, if different, trading name

  • Employer Identification Number

  • Business address

  • Entity type

  • Details of the person verifying on the business's behalf

Why it is required

Melon moves money on your behalf, which makes identity verification a legal requirement rather than a preference. It also lets Melon issue the right tax forms at year end.

Non-US

Agencies and creators outside the US provide equivalent identification and complete US tax forms where required. See Melon for agencies outside the US and Canada and Can Canadian creators use Melon?.

Tax forms at year end

Melon issues US tax forms where thresholds are met. See Understanding your 1099 tax forms.
